Macedonia

Introduction

Delicious does not have to be complicated. Here is a wonderful fruit salad that is as good as anything that can be made and which could not be easier to put together. In fact, it used to be my job to make it as a child. If you are curious about the name, it comes from the Greek region which had people of so many different ethnic and cultural background that it was like a “mixed salad” of humanity.

Ingredients

  • Fruit of you Choice
  • Lemon Juice
  • Sugar
  • Marsala, Luxardo, or Rum (Optional)

Process

Make as simple syrup by heating equal parts of sugar and water in a pan until dissolved. Cut the fruit of your choice into grape sized pieces taking care not to make them too small, leave fruit that oxidizes easily for last and pour some lemon juice on these too keep them from browning and for flavor.

Add the cooled syrup to the salad according to your taste, and if you wish, add some wine or spirit. Place the salad in the refrigerator and let it sit for at least an hour.

Serving

You can serve the salad in cups by itself, or with some whipped cream or gelato. I would not hesitate to serve it as dessert even at an important dinner, particularly if dressed with a fine liqueur or spirit. Simplicity exudes elegance.
